How was Viagra founded?

 

In 1998, Sildenafil was launched as Viagra by Pfizer. In the UK, more three PDE5 inhibitors have been launched since then.

 

Below are the series in which the history of Viagra changed:

 

 

1989: Pfizer’s laboratories in the UK first synthesized and tested Sildenafil. Sildenafil is a drug that selectively targets and strongly hinders the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5).

 

1991: The first experiment of the drug showed penile erection as the side effect of coronary heart disease. Sildenafil had no effect on coronary heart disease.

 

1998: The New England Journal of Medicine published the crucial third phase experiment of Sildenafil ED.

 

1998: Viagra was approved by the FDA and EMA as the oral treatment for ED.

 

2002: The FDA and EMA approved Tadalafil for the treatment of ED in November the following and the November of 2002 respectively.

 

2003: EMA approved Vardenafil in March and by FDA in August.

 

2007: A small dose of tadalafil as a single- daily therapy was approved by The European Commission.

 

2008: After the regulatory expresses concern over no medical supervision for ED Pfizer took back the application to EMA for marketing Viagra over the counter, which can also delay diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

 

2009: Boots was the first Pharmacy ion the UK to provide Viagra without prescriptions under a patient group direction.

 

2010: Viagra is offered under a patient group direction without prescription by Tesco.

 

2010: Vardenafil becomes the first PDE5 inhibitor introduced for ED in an orodispersible tablet.

 

2012: The US FDA approved Avanafil for treatment of ED in April and by the EMA in June the following year.

 

2013: Viagra’s UK patent expires paving the way to a generic version of the drug to be introduced.

 

2014: Lilly, the manufacturer of Cialis agrees to allow the French firm Sanofi to buy exclusive rights to sell Cialis as a non-prescription medicine in Europe, Canada, the USA and Australia.

 

2014: On the NHS the generic Viagra can be prescribed for any male with ED.

 

2017: Sildenafil 50mg to be available as a pharmacy medicine was recommended by the MHRA.
